CLEVELAND, OH - Residents of Kinderhook, New York, are familiar with spooky tales of headless horsemen, ghosts, and fairies. After all, the little town is steeped in history and folklore. Situated near the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, Kinderhook is where Martin Van Buren is buried, and it inspired Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
While these famous events took place in the comfortably distant past, far more recently, in the 1980s, Kinderhook became known for a new type of fright. Once the locals began sharing their experiences, the terrifying Kinderhook Creature began to take shape.
In The Kinderhook Creature and Beyond: A Personal Reminiscence, author Bruce G. Hallenbeck tells the story of those times. In so doing, he delves into his own history and his numerous paranormal and cryptozoological encounters with what he calls “high strangeness” as well as those of his family members and other local residents.
Covering regional folklore, history, ghostly encounters, and various strange occurrences throughout the Kinderhook/Hudson Valley area through the eyes of a native to the region, the book documents encounters ranging from the Kinderhook Blob to UFO sightings to “little people” to ghosts and a great deal more. It also highlights and preserves various points of historical significance that showcase the importance of the region in local as well as national history.
Hallenbeck comments, “I grew up in the Hudson Valley, which shaped my interests and life moving forward. After having a personal experience, I was pushed into the world of paranormal subjects and became determined to record, maintain, and share these stories of the region and its people.”
“Few things are as compelling as a small town and their mysterious secrets. Occult knowledge, fascinating stories, hidden dramas and scary tales. While often excluded from traditional histories, they form an alternate reality that is only whispered about, many times with a wink and a nudge...One such location is the tiny town of Kinderhook, New York ... Bruce Hallenbeck offers the reader a riveting rare personal glimpse into these secret histories and alternate realms which the late astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek once referred to as ‘parallel reality.’” ~ Paul Bartholomew, author of Bigfoot Encounters in New York and New England, in his foreword to The Kinderhook Creature and Beyond
